At Downtown Houston you will find FREE audio and self-guided tours available, brought to you by the Downtown District and Houston First Corporation.  Among the tours are The Ultimate Downtown Walking Tour, the Museum District Walk & Roll, and A Walk in the Park: Discovery Green Walking Tour.

Hosted by Sugar Hill Studios owner Dan Workman, The Ultimate Downtown Walking Tour could teach native Houstonians as well as newcomers a thing or two about the downtown area in an entertaining, upbeat way. This tour covers two miles in Downtown Houston. If walking, allow at least two hours time.

The Museum District Walk & Roll, also a two-mile tour, is hosted by retired ABC Channel 13 news anchor Shara Fryer. You can start the tour downtown or, if you prefer, begin it in the Museum District. Allow plenty of extra time to explore the museums.

Want a shorter tour? A Walk in the Park: Discovery Green Walking Tour takes about half an hour to complete the 0.6 mile stroll. Founding president Guy Hagstette gives you a personal tour with information about art, activities, events and more at Discovery Green.

Memorial Day Tribute in Crest Lake Park

The Tampa Bay Veterans Alliance hosts a Memorial Day Tribute honoring veterans on Sunday, May 27, at 7:30pm. The free, family-friendly event is open to the public and will feature a sunset ceremony followed by a full length feature movie. You can bring lawn chairs or a blanket and food for a picnic to enjoy while watching the film. Concession stands will also be available.

Free Admission to The Florida Aquarium

Throughout the weekend, May 26-28, The Florida Aquarium in Downtown Tampa is offering two free admission tickets for any active duty or retired military and a guest. Up to four additional family members can purchase tickets for $10.  You must show your military ID to receive the free and discounted admissions.

AFHM Annual Memorial Day Funfest

Another family-friendly event, the Armed Forces History Museum in Largo will host its annual Memorial Day Funfest May 28 from 10am to 4pm.  Activities include a rock wall climbing, power bungee jumping, karaoke, a DJ, and much more. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 4-12.

Military Families Day at Henry B. Plant Museum

In honor of those who served our country, the Henry B. Plant Museum is inviting all active and retired military to visit the museum as guests during Military Families Day May 27 from noon-5pm. Refreshments will be served.

Expect hundreds of people to be coming into town next month for the popular festival.  Western Days will offer events for all ages, including Old West skits, free pony rides, a petting zoo, calf roping demonstrations, and a chili cook-off.   At high noon on both days the Old Town Temecula Gun Fighters will delight the crowds with a comical bank robbery and shoot-out featuring dozens of actors at The Bank Restaurant.

Live western music throughout the weekend adds to the festivity. Performing on Saturday is Older than Dirt, a local band of seniors averaging 75 years of age. The band will play a mix of traditional western, country and bluegrass music from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday will feature the Judy Taylor trio playing country and western music, also from 12:30 to 3:30pm. Taylor entertains the crowd with trick roping while yodeling.  Banjo player Captain Billy will also roam around town playing during the celebration.

The chili cook-off, both an ICS regional qualifier and People’s Choice event, is Sunday with tasting from 11am – 3pm, or until the chili is gone. Awards are at 4:30pm.

Public parking for Western Days is free, although living so close to Old Town residents of our Temecula apartments may prefer to walk. A Farmer’s Market will also be open until noon Saturday at Sixth and Front Street, so you may want to go early.

Set for April 21, 2012 at Galway Downs, the Temecula Mud Run is not your average 5K Run/Walk. It’s a challenging, exciting and messy adventure through water and mud obstacles.  Some participants plan to be super competitive; others just want to be part of the event and plan to have lots of fun.

At The Vineyards, we consider it a great opportunity to bring all of us closer together as a community and show our support. A portion of entry and parking fees for the Temecula Mud Run will go directly to Jacob’s House and the Police Activities League for a S.A.F.E. Valley, two charities we are happy to help.

The 2012 Tampa Bay Host Committee is still signing up volunteers for the week of the Republican National Convention. It doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is; Host Committee volunteers are non-partisan.

You would not be volunteering for the Republican Party. If you sign up, your mission would be to represent Tampa Bay. You would be volunteering your time for our state, our communities – our home.

Thousands of people will be visiting in August for the convention and your job as a volunteer would be to show them Tampa hospitality. Volunteers will welcome guests at local airports and hotels throughout the area, as well as support Host Committee programs and a variety of events leading up to the convention. You select how you want to spend your time volunteering.

Why Should I Volunteer?

Wondering why you would want to volunteer to participate rather than flee the area before a mass of delegates, media representatives, protestors and more descend upon Tampa Bay?  Volunteers do get a free Host Committee uniform, which they can keep, and an invitation to a big thank-you celebration after the convention. But that’s not the reason you should get involved.

We love Tampa and we know you do, too. Now you can have the chance to tell and show people why. Plus, this may be the only opportunity you get in your lifetime to be involved with such an event. The last Presidential Nominating Convention held in Florida was in 1972.
